Chat with Um Bot

Um Bot is Um Out’s assistant inside the Premiere Pro panel. Ask it about your open project (“summarize this interview,” “suggest chapters”), or tell it what to clean up. It reads the project you have open, so it answers about your edit rather than about editing in general.

Review is the default. Auto-apply is off until you turn it on. When it is on, one directly requested action can change the timeline without opening review; multi-step work still stops for review. Premiere Undo remains available.

What Um Bot can do

  • Answer questions about the edit in front of you, from the open sequence, its clips, the timestamped transcript, and whatever the last analysis pass proposed. It answers with timecodes: “your intro runs long; the story starts at 0:41” rather than “try tightening your intro”. It will not invent a clip name, a timing, or a line that is not in the transcript, and it says so when the answer is not in what it can see.
  • Volunteer what it notices. A point made twice, a section that takes two minutes to reach its subject, an ending that trails off: it will say so with the timecode even if you did not ask.
  • Run any tool for you: silences, filler words, bad takes, captions, punch-ins, smart zooms, chapters, stream highlights, short clips and Clip That, and it can add a styled title. Each one comes back as the same review list you would have got by running it yourself.
  • Work in steps. Ask for something that takes more than one pass and it can plan up to four steps. A multi-step chain never Auto-applies; it finishes at review before anything is applied.

Anything else (colour, music, reframing, moving media, organising bins) it will tell you is not available yet rather than claim it did it.

Auto-apply: the one setting that skips the review

Above the message box there is an Auto-apply edits switch. It is off by default, and while it is off Um Bot stops at the review every time, so you approve every cut.

Turn it on and one directly requested action can change your timeline without opening review. The panel says so on the switch itself, in amber, because it is the one place in Um Out where something reaches your timeline without you seeing it first. Edit → Undo reverses it.

Worth knowing what it does not do: auto-apply covers the single action you asked for. It does not hand the model an unattended run of the multi-step chain above; that would be a different and considerably less safe product.

Which AI answers: two ways

Your own key (BYOK)

On the Local and Plus plans you can connect your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini key. The key is stored by the local companion in your operating system’s credential vault, never in the panel or an Um Out account. See Use your own API key for setup.

Hosted Um Bot

Hosted Um Bot is live with Um Out Plus, so there is no personal key or provider billing account to manage. Requests go through Um Out’s AI gateway with your account entitlement and remain subject to the safeguards and usage allowance shown with the plan. Your media is never uploaded; only the minimized text context needed to answer is sent.

Which plan includes it

  • 7-day trial: three tools, and Um Bot is not one of them.
  • Local: use Um Bot with your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini key.
  • Plus: Hosted is selected by default, and you can switch to your own key whenever you prefer.

Chats stay with the right project

Chats are stored locally in the panel and grouped by project and sequence. The open sequence appears first. Chats from another project are not shown, and a chat from another sequence is read-only until that sequence is open, so a reply cannot use or edit the wrong timeline.

Use New chat to start fresh. You can clear or delete one conversation without erasing the rest of that project’s history. Um Out keeps up to 24 chats with up to 30 messages in each chat.

Start chatting

  1. Open the Um Out panel in Premiere and choose Ask Um Bot.
  2. For your own key, add it once in Settings → AI assistant: choose the provider, name the model, paste the key, and press Save.
  3. Type a question or a request in Message Um Bot and send.
  4. If Um Bot proposes an edit, it opens review unless Auto-apply is on for that single action. Approve the changes you want, then apply; Premiere Undo remains available.

Privacy

  • Your video, audio, and local media paths are never uploaded by Um Bot.
  • The minimized text context can include project and sequence names, clip names and timings, a cached timestamped transcript, and findings from the latest Um Out pass.
  • With your own key, that text goes only to the provider you chose.
  • With Hosted, that text goes through Um Out’s gateway to the hosted model on your behalf.

If a message fails

Um Out retries one safe transient failure. If it still cannot answer, nothing is changed and the message remains available with Retry message. Repeated failures usually mean the hosted service, internet connection, provider key, or plan entitlement needs attention.
