Create and style timed captions

Um Out transcribes the dialogue track you choose, lets you correct every line, and renders the approved text as timed caption clips. Treat the transcript as the source of truth: fix the words before you create the visual layer.

Before you start

• Open the final sequence or a duplicate you can safely test.
• Choose the audio track with the cleanest dialogue.
• Finish major timing edits first. Moving dialogue after transcription makes caption timing stale.

Create captions

1. Open Create captions, choose the timeline range and dialogue track, then analyze.
2. Read the transcript while listening. Correct names, punctuation, and any misheard word before styling.
3. Pick a look: Signal (blue word highlight), Clean (simple white), Studio (bold outline), or Custom.
4. Choose the rhythm: turn Highlight each spoken word on or off, set Words per caption to Auto, 1, 2 or 4, and pick an Entrance motion — None, Soft pop, or Punchy pop.
5. On Custom, set the Text, Spoken word, Outline and Panel colours, plus Text size and Screen position. Press Update preview to see it over your own frame.
6. Press Create on V2. The captions land as transparent, timed clips above your video, so you can keep editing underneath them.

Word-by-word highlighting

With Highlight each spoken word on, each caption phrase is split into frame-aligned states: the active word changes colour at its transcript timestamp while the rest stay in the base colour. The timings come from the transcript, so poor transcription timing produces poor highlighting. Correct or re-transcribe the source rather than guessing frames by hand.

Saving a look you like

Under Custom, name your settings and press Save look. It appears in the saved-looks list on this computer, so the next project starts from it instead of from Signal.

To be clear about what this is: it saves Um Out’s settings locally. It does not import a Premiere text style, a Motion Graphics template or a .mogrt, and there is no way to point Um Out at one. If you need a house style Um Out cannot reproduce, build the captions here and restyle the resulting clips in Premiere, or tell us what you need — template support is not built.

Fix captions that do not match the audio

1. Confirm the selected voice track is the one you hear in the program monitor.
2. Re-analyze after any silence-removal or dialogue edit.
3. Correct the transcript line in Um Out before creating the caption clips.
4. If only timing is wrong, verify the source sample rate and check for speed changes or nested clips.

Keep the page and timeline clean

Create one caption pass after the transcript is approved. Repeatedly pressing Create can stack duplicate clips. If Premiere stops partway through, use Undo, remove the partial caption layer, and retry a shorter range. See troubleshooting for the support checklist.
