How it works

Um Out reads the whole dialogue track on your timeline and proposes every gap it could remove, with the minimum length under your control. Nothing is applied until you have seen the list.

Each proposed cut is a tick box. Untick the beat before a punchline, the breath between two ideas, the pause you took on purpose. What is left is applied as ordinary Premiere edits you can trim by hand afterwards.

Picture and dialogue are cut together. Because Premiere’s plugin API has no razor tool, Um Out rebuilds the visible segments rather than slicing them, which is why the video track keeps up with the audio instead of being left behind.

What makes a cut sound natural

Two settings do most of the work. Room before speech and room after speech hold back a little quiet on each side of the speech that is kept, so words do not start or end abruptly. The presets set both for you.

J and L cuts let audio lead or trail the picture across a join. An L-cut keeps the current audio running as the next shot begins; a J-cut brings the next audio in early. Both are optional and both are applied as real keyframed edits you own.

Where it runs

On your computer. Silence detection needs no transcript and no internet connection, so nothing about the recording is uploaded and there is no per-minute cost to watch.

That also means a four-hour recording is limited by your machine, not by an upload, and works the same on a plane as it does at a desk.

Questions people ask

Does it cut the video track as well as the audio?

Yes. Picture and dialogue are rebuilt together, so the two stay in sync. Earlier versions of this tool did not, which is the single most common way an automatic silence remover ruins an edit.

Can I undo it?

Press Cmd/Ctrl+Z immediately afterwards to step back through Premiere’s own edit history. There is also a setting, on by default, that applies the edit to a copy of your sequence and leaves the original untouched.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes. Silence removal reads the audio waveform, not a transcript, so it needs no speech model and no network.

Why did it leave some quiet in?

Gaps shorter than your minimum length are ignored on purpose, and constant room noise can read as speech throughout. Try a shorter minimum gap or a tighter preset.
